Prompt Engineering Definition

The term Prompt Engineer is commonly used to refer to someone specializing in communication with an instance of a Large Language Model (LLM). If you do not know what a LLM is, it is what you would call Artifical Intelligence. That is an over-simplification since there are many types of AI and a LLM is one of multiple possibilities but in this context Prompt Engineering is AI. Another relevant term for a LLM is Virtual Assistant.

Note: people often refer to an instance of a LLM as a LLM but the "M" in LLM is for "model" and a model is a design, not an instance of a model; see LLM design vs implementation.
